Bluefaced Leicester
Hand dyed Tonals in Roving Top
Bluefaced Leicester sheep were bred in Northumberland, England in the early 1900's from existing breeds of Leicester long haired sheep. The blue refers to their black skin covered in white hairs giving their heads a bluish cast. Today they are raised in Northern England, Scotland, Wales and in parts of the US (mostly MI).
Wool from this breed has a lovely luster with a staple length of 3-6" (8-15cm) and a micron count of 26-27. However, if you spin woolen (rather than worsted) the final yarn has a "next to the skin" hand closer to a merino softness, but easier to spin.
We are dyeing these in tonalities rather than colorways. They are soft colors that look well alone or together. Some of them, if plied with our colorways, will complement our colorways beautifully.
